screw that first function i posted.  i was sleepy.  but the second function
could actually work.  with a bit of modification, `ret_pathval()' could do
what the original problem was meant to.

i was gunning for a more general approach.  Sean could do the required mo-
difications to the second post i made, so that it does what he wants it to
quite easily.
