I actually carried the first digital pager Hey, I'm always near a phone. I have a wonderful rechargable calling card that costs me two cents a minute to call someone, so if I have to, just use my card... or since Atlanta has one of the largest local calling areas in the US (four area codes' worth), fifty cents will do me fine too. :) I remember back in 1982 (or was it '83) my dad, who was a security guard overnight at a bank, had a digital pager... it was SO COOL (we got our first VCR in '84). I learned how to put a space between numbers and we worked out a code so Dad would know when to call and when not to (this was before voice mail). I still remember the code and I mentioned to my parents that I'm getting a pager... they asked me if I wanted them to still use the code when they paged me! :) I'm teaching my wife the same code too... voice mail is fine for short messages (15 seconds), but for longer ones, just a short message will do via the pager... my wife uses the last two digits of her birth year, followed by 1, 2, or 3 (in de-escelated [? is that a word?] order), one being "call right now". Of course, there's 911, but that's for extreme emergencies. Also, living with my mother-in-law, I'd like to have a "permanent" number people can reach me at. It's also handy for the BBS in case something goes askew and one of my callers can page me with a voicemail. :) To rescue the topicality of this message: I saw "SuperPager" on Hobbes... wonder if it's any good...
