Subj : FireBird 0.61 for OS/2 To : Mike Luther From : Bat Lang Date : Tue Sep 09 2003 10:05 pm * Crossposted from: Fidonet International OS/2 Conference -=> Quoting Mike Luther to Bat Lang, [08 Sep 03 11:19:58] <=- ML> Before the Bat flies away into the sunrise! Mikey Dog, you know I wouldn't do that. Remember Icarus?? {^; BL> Just about smack on, actually. Since the GCC you offered was the BL> earlier version, I thought to do a Google search on "GCC322" + "OS/2" BL> and struck pay dirt. It was a msg from one of the Yahoo msg areas, and BL> dealt with Mozilla 1.5+. Within the msg were two links, one that lead BL> to a source for GCC322, the other for Libc01. ML> You are too good to bet with ., chuckle, but .. I had the foresite to ML> correspond the dates in my archives to the dates of the data files in ML> them! ML> I *HATE* *HATE* *HATE* ... hmpf .. the Web Crawler Worm idea that we ML> should alter the dates of the downloads to whenever! What happens on ML> a lot of this stuff now is that the data in the download will be the ML> same, but the file date for it varies widely on what you crawl upon in ML> the Web. I think more errors have maybe been made this way with OS/2 ML> driver dates and so on for files that appear newer, but are not. ML> For that reason, I always try to use either FTP for the snatch, or at ML> least look inside the file and try to pick off the latest date file ML> inside it before I put it in my library or put it up on the board for ML> download. Those were the dates on the DATA that was in that file as ML> it originally came from a WEB download,,, and were changed ML> accordingly. ML> OTOH, if you are correct about there being later files for the GCC ML> information will you PLEASE post it here to me so I can correct my ML> error... ML> Thanks friend to all of us here... Actually, it had nothing to do with file dates, but everything to do with fileNAMES. I hold GCC322 to be more recent than GCC321, which is what I understood you had. So that's why I popped into Google (was there ever a more useful site?) and did that search. One of the 'hits' was a Yahoo forum on Mozilla, explaining the problem in Mozilla 1.5b was cured with the addition of GCC322 and LIBC01. Since the poster was good enough to include two links to the sites for those two drivers, I picked up both, deployed them, and the next time I tried Firebird, it worked. Since I had not launched Mozilla 1.5b (I had it all installed, and then discovered Firebird--strange that we never heard any Firebird discussion in here??) so I gave it a try, and it too worked out-of-the-box. {^; As I said earlier, both are too slow on my iron (relative to 4.61) that I have used them only minimally. Actually, what prompted me load them in the first place is that my main banking site for bill payment (AmerExpress) stopped 'honoring' my 4.61, giving me a NOT FOUND error screen following my entry of my ID/PW. No matter what I tried to obviate that NOT FOUND (rebooting, relaunching NS, emptying caches, et al) had any effect. That screen always following my login. Both of the newer Mozilla products got me right past that screen. The problems with both of them is that each new screen was a multi-minute wait!! The concept behind Firebird is MY kinda concept. "Let's create a browser that's just a browser, without any of the added bloat of Email, Msging, etc. I have long wished for such a pgm, but never found one until I downloaded Moz 1.5b and just happened to see a link called Firebird...Viola!! {^; Now if it just gets faster... How come I didn't learn about this new browser, Firebird, right HERE!?? To me this ranks right up there with sliced bread! Lack of an updated FREE browser has been my biggest concern with using OS/2. I'd even pay for it if it would run faster on my iron. Come on, guys and gals, wakeup out there!! It's FIREBIRD time!!!
