Subj : EXPLORER and SHEZ replacements To : Mike Powell From : Peter Knapper Date : Mon Apr 18 2005 01:51 pm Hi Mike, MP> I am looking to replace a couple of programs w/OS/2 vers... one that I use MP> under Windows, and the other under DOS. MP> MP> Windows Explorer - You have to be kidding, that thing is load of junk, as useless as (insert your own expletive here).......;-) What did you find useful in your DOS Days? I preferred Xtree Gold, and for OS/2 there is Ztree Bold. Comes in OS/2 (ZtreeBold) and Win (ZtreeWin) versions - http://www.ztree.com/ Ztree is text mode (window size can be set to about 5 different widths and heights), it does cost, but has a good free trial period and is (IMHO) good value. I also get it to invoke an excellent text mode Editor, Qedit/2. MP> I am used to the Explorer that comes with MP> 95/98, and not the newer, flashier ones, if that means anything. ;-) They are all pretty UN-flashy to me... However you can use the OS/2 drives folder in LIST mode, and set all drives to default to "Open as List" and the result is "similar" to what Explorer can do, but I still prefer something like ZTB's approach, much faster and more useful to me. IMHO there is too much of this mouse crap around, I much prefer using the keyboard... MP> SHEZ - this is a DOS ZIP, etc., archive manipulator. When I ran DOS I used SHEZ as well, however here is the neat part. With ZTB you can set up associations on how it handles certain file types, EG: Ctrl-F5 while its pointing to an "archive" type file and it opens the appropriate Archve for that file to allow you to view extract, add, delete files etc.. and all this is OS/2 native. If it doesnt knw the fie it defautls to viewing the file in Hex mode, AND you can HEX Edit a file! You can also "tag" files in a list and archve the tagged files together, etc... I have mine set up to handle ZIP, LZH, ARC, ARJ, ZOO, RAR, etc... ZtreeBold should do what you want, its just a question of if you object to text mode interfaces (I certainly don't......;-)). Cheers............pk. --- Maximus/2 3.01 * Origin: Another Good Point About OS/2 (3:772/1.10) .
