Peter, Correct. *** Quoting Peter Knapper to Rich Wonneberger dated 02-27-05 *** > DHCP is VERY configureable, but most of it is hidden from the user > because it can be rather complex in some situations, and there can be > unexpect3ed side effects. A lot can depend on how your ISP operates as > well... I haven't found a way in the router to provide a domain name. I seem to have stumbled on a fix anyway. :} I bought a new router last Sunday. Staples had a Netgear in the flyer for $5.00 after instant & 'easy rebate'. The 'easy rebate' is filled out on line and took only a couple minutes with figuring it out. My orig setup, I had my DSL modem feed a Linksys router (10/100 base only), and the Linksys feed a Dlink 802.11b router. Both routers were in 192.168.1 network. The Linksys DHCP was .100 to .110, the Dlink DHCP was .120 to .130. The Linksys got DNS addresses by DHCP from my ISP and provided it to its DHCP clients, including the Dlink. The Dlink provided the same DCHP info to its two or three clients. The reason I had the two routers, the Dlink clients are Windy that I record TV with. I cant remember the last time I used any of my VCR's. :} I shut that router off unless I am updating the TV listings or copying a show from one box to the other to burn to DVD. Anyway, I tried to replace the Dlink router with the Netgear. No matter what I tried, as soon as I plugged in the WAN link the router stopped working. I could ping it, but not get to it with a browser. (Even tried a cross-over cable). I spent HOURS last Monday trying to figure it out. When I finally saw what was killing it, I tried connecting it directly to the DSL modem. At this point it worked fine. ??? I still spent a few hours trying to figure what was wrong. What I finally did, I replaced the Linksys with the new Netgear & shut off the wireless (802.11b/g). I put a cheap switch in for the two Windy boxes for now but will probably put the old Dlink router back some day. Things seemed to be working again Monday night, but Tuesday night I lost internet connectivity. Had to cold start the DSL modem and the Netgear. Seems OK since. What I think happened, the new router got the same IP address from the modem on Monday, on Tuesday the lease had to be renewed and the modem detected a new MAC address and issued a new IP address. By Wednesday I was so happy it was working I decided it was time to get my newer box working to replace the BBS box (Warp4) and my eCS 1.1 regular use box. I copied my e-mail & news groups over (both with Mozilla) and installed IBM's latest version 2.04 to replace 2.03 that I was using. The only thing I couldn't figure, I lost the read message flag in all the news groups. Not the biggest deal, I just re-read a few messages from the previous day. Today I got the latest Apache release & copied my pages to it. Seems to be working as far as I can tell. If you want to look, turtil.darktech.org Back to the orig problem, the domain name box is empty now. :} I put turtil in for now, but it didn't ask to re-boot so I didn't.
