Subj : OFFLINE READER NEEDE˙˙˙˙˙ To : Bill Wise From : Martin Prieto Date : Fri Aug 04 2000 12:01 pm BW> There is another conference called "OS9-Debate," but as long as the BW> moderator in this one doesn't mind . . . We're talking on and about OS-DEBATE(s) so that's not a problem. BW> I like the GUI. One of the big things you have to get used to is that BW> if you drag a program's icon into the trash basket to get it off your BW> desktop, the program gets deleted, so you have to watch little stuff BW> like that. Even the aliasses? I delete tons of those. The Mac GUI kick ass. The two things I like so far about Macintosh's it's the GUI and the Unix foundation. Mac OS X will be less Unix transparent, but Apple, unfortunately, also wants it to hide it from common mortals. Seriously, i'd buy a Mac if I had a) the money and b) if it could boot directly into a Unix shell and then load the finder upon ask. BW> One of the big advantages (so far) is that the guys writing viruses BW> write 'em for PCs, and they don't work on Macs. I have A/V software BW> running on the Mac, of course, but a friend of mine in CA who used to BW> work for Apple before she went with Phoenix Technologies said that BW> it's been so long since she's seen an Apple virus that she doesn't BW> remember when it was. In the meantime, though, I'll keep the A/V BW> software database updated as often as new ones come out. Y'ah I know. I use Linux here and viruses alert seems like a distant memory for me. At school I take precautions because I can infect others computers, but at home I don't even think of it. If I ever get a dedicater i-net connection and start a server I might install one of those for Linux. Even under Windows I only had 3 the last 3 years, so I just don't take it seriously even where there's a threat. BW> I just upgraded the RAM from 64MB to 160MB. It'll be interesting to BW> see what effect that has on the crashes that SoftWindows has been BW> causing. It IS a memory hog. VMware, the OS emulator for Linux works by cutting the RAM for the guest OS. I don't think it's shared like it should do. 160 Mb sures helps a lot! But hey, like I say for Wine (Windows binary app Emulator), "It's not a Windows emulator for nothing!" It even manages to crash my computer while simply compiling it.
