I have not made a dial up BC>> connection to a BBS in at least two or maybe even 3 years. BC>> It has all been by Telnet. I have even heard that there BC>> are BBS's out there that only support telnet connections. BC>> Like you stated why pay the phone co to make a connection BC>> that you can do over the internet for free. For most people the Internet is not 'free'. I know it's doable but clunky and the free access imposes limitations that probably aren't a 'good' thing for users in the long run. JUNO and I think Earthlink are now forcing acceptance of use of each users machine for distributed processing of other peoples garbage which I am also opposed to in principal. I have no quarrel with seti@home since it's purely voluntary AFAIK. JH> Exactly. I don't use my modem for anything except JH> connecting to the internet... oops... my bank uses a JH> proprietary software that insists on dialing out to make a JH> secure connection. I'm seriously considering changing banks JH> to one that works more like **I** do. I like to look into the eyes of the people who hold my money. Sort of a superstition I suppose? BC>> Telnet is used a lot for remote applications not connected BC>> with BBS's so will be around if and when the BBS's are all BC>> gone by the wayside. JH> And a good point that I had not even considered! Yes, I JH> have telnetted into routers and other equipment to JH> configure them. Telnet is just a framework for telecom. Using different port addresses you connect to different servers using different protocols. As a framework for telecom _something_ will always fill the void where more specialized applications either do not or do not do it particularly well. I prefer telnet apps that include at least one common transfer protocol but by definition a telnet app doesn't require any. > > , , > o/ Charles.Angelich \o , > <| AngelFirecom |> __o/ > / > USA, MI < \ __\__ ___ * ATP/16bit 2.31 * ....
