To : Jim Hanoian From : Ed Williams Date : Mon Apr 02 2001 01:38 am Hello Jim, JH> EW> I consider it one of Fidonet's greatest failings, in failing to JH> EW> get the wonderful talent in Fidonet involved to come up with a JH> EW> reliable decent term program for people to contact it. I think JH>This seems like blaming the Post Office for the lack of JH>good (free) writers in the US. Please note that there JH>are a wide variety of free newspapers and magazines, if JH>you seek them out. My point of course was that Fidonet, like most of the BBS authors out there have done precious little to put the tools into the hands of the users who will in the end make or break the whole BBS scene. JH>By the same token, there are plenty of free communications JH>programs, you just have to look for them and accept the fact JH>that they don't do everything quite like a commercial program. JH>Depending on your requirements, the free trade magazine or JH>the free comm program may be acceptable. That's up to you, JH>and is not the responsibility of the Post Office or Fido. I'm sorry, what you say is very small minded. You assume of course that there are commercial terminal programs that are under current development, which is only barely true. You also assume that Fidonet can survive without putting at least the barest tools into the hands of those people it wants in the net. The fact is, that FrontDoor, was a blessing to the BBS community and free to all for non commercial use, and it set the standard for front end mail communications. If it hadn't been for FrontDoor or similar products made by people who believed in organizations like Fidonet there would be no Fidonet at all. I stand by my statement that Fidonet's greatest failing is lacking the ability to put it's vast amounts of talent to decent gains for our community by providing at least the bare bones utilities for the users to contact BBS's. Thank god people like TIC didn't think they could stand up to commercial TIC packages (Did they ever make them?).
