This seems like blaming the Post Office for the lack of
good (free) writers in the US.  Please note that there 
are a wide variety of free newspapers and magazines, if 
you seek them out.

By the same token, there are plenty of free communications 
programs, you just have to look for them and accept the fact 
that they don't do everything quite like a commercial program.  

Depending on your requirements, the free trade magazine or
the free comm program may be acceptable.  That's up to you,
and is not the responsibility of the Post Office or Fido.
