Subj : Best GUI package for Wind To : Shannon Talley From : Jon Nebel Date : Fri Nov 17 2000 06:55 am ST>-> There isn't one! ST>Hi Jon, ST>Well - there is... I've got one that comes with my PCPlus for Windows ST>package which is still supported - and continually being updated. It's GUI, ST>and true 32bit. However, it's not a "stand alone" piece of software. It's ST>part of the combined package with Procomm Plus (unfortunately). I was ST>looking for something to place on my DHTML/QWK web page so when users ST>download their QWK package (Via HTML) they can view some other GUI packages ST>to download too. I was making reference to "stand alone" QWK readers. :)) And what I said still stands. You *are* going to have a very hard time finding what you want, unless someone like (as an example) Santronics comes out with a re-write of Off-line Xpress, or Silver Xpress and converts that code to a true 32-bit app. If you were only looking for a 16-bit reader, I'd recommend Off-line Xpress. I've tried them all, and like it the best. Right now, the offline readers are in limbo. The internet has taken it's toll on Fido Net and BBS'ing in general. The average new user doesn't even know about BBS'ing and Fido. All they know is their new system comes with a "newgroup" reader, and that's that. :-( I guess you visited: http://www.kannoncom.com/~jhanoian/readers/ and looked around at all the "goodies"? Most are no longer really supported and the new ones that are, lack really true tech support IMO. It's a shame to register a program, only to find the kid has gone off to collage and is no longer interested (those of you who remember Boyan) in developing or supporting an application. Your ProComm Plus' offline reader used to be a shareware reader. Then the author went to work for ProComm, then Datastorms got bought out by Quarterdeck, and then Quarterdeck sold it all off to Symantec. You're very lucky to have your reader still supported. I USED to be a registered user of ProComm, both DOS and Windows version. But they went south and I stopped upgrading. I chose Qmodem Pro, for my com app. They are now defunct! No support, no nothing! :-( Unless it's free, your users are not going to like getting caught in the "planned obsolesce, orphaned application" world of computing. :)) Like I said before .....
