I think the older PKPAK/PKARC files also say "PK" at the beginning.
That could create a problem if your signature checker only checks for
that; not that many people would select ARC'd QWK packets unless they are
using an 8 bit museum-piece that can't hack ZIP well... :-)

BTW, I haven't had the spammed reply packets for a long time. Hopefully
the bug has disappeared for good. :-) If it re-appears, I'll try to
send you the packets.
