But instead she was fast asleep when her lounge went up in smoke. The heat generated from Brenda's ball set her curtains ablaze and started a fire which caused damage running into thousands of pounds. "I'm devastated," she said yesterday. "But at the same time I know I'm lucky to be alive. The firemen said I could have died in the smoke." Brenda, 56, a member of the National Federation of Spiritual Healers, said: "When I heard the alarm I went down to the lounge. All of a sudden there were flames shooting up the curtains. "The fire brigade were very quick, but the lounge is wrecked. All the furniture is ruined and I've lost a treatment bed I use, my CDs and player, TV and video. There is smoke damage to the rest of the house, which is filthy and smelly." Brenda, of Harrow Weald, north London, added: "Although I have done a little bit of clairvoyancy, and I was thinking of maybe doing some more, the crystal ball was a gift. I'm actually a spiritual healer and I practice Reiki, a Japanese healing method."
