Have you ever heard of the heavy-metal group calledGodsmack? The group's members are Wiccans and the lyrics of their songs spew obscenities, anger, hatred and demon possession. Although it's not the kind of group that most people would like to associate with, the U.S. Navy does. The newest Navy recruiting effort is reportedly designed to attract "Generation Y." But the music the a features is quickly making enemies. Tatiana Bowers, who has spent the last 17 years as a Navy wife, said Navy families are offended by the music in the ad. "(The music) doesn't represent them, and I don't feel it represents me and my family," Bowers said. "I'm afraid (of) people - who are attracted to this kind of music and attracted to this group - being in the Navy,because I don't think they'll have the moral integrity and the moral character that the Navy really needs and wants." Commander Steve Lowery, with the Navy's Recruiting Command, said they didn't consider Godsmack's message or image when they created the ads "The music was selected by our advertising agency as being most appropriate to match our visuals in our commercials," Lowery said. However, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, R-Md., believes the Navy needs to rethink the ads. "How can they avoid making the connection between Navy life and this kind of lifestyle that's promoted by the lyrics of many of the songs that they (Godsmack) have done?" Bartlett asked. Youth culture experts agree the Navy's ad is a tacit endorsement of Godsmack's work.
