I think it's more than just that. There are too many people who firmly believe 
they have the right to not only force their opnions onto another but also the 
right to actively interfere with their lifestyles. The problem is enhanced when 
people just stand back with their NIMBY attitude. Look at that suicide I posted 
this morning. Latest figures in Oz suggest that in a school situation 15% are 
bullies, 10% are victums & the remainding 75% are glad they are not being 
bullied & don't do anything. Same applies to spritual repression. A small %age 
of bigots, bullying a smaller %age of victums while the majority can't be 
bothered stepping in thus validating the bigot's actions.

Only happen when the people & G'ment understand that the planet does _NOT_ 
revolve around them, & the USA is the "best" & "only" place to live. I know 
many "Yank bashers" who actually refer to the USA as a 3rd world country...

From my POV Yes the US may be a great place to live & Yes there are plenty of 
oppertunities in the US & Yes there are other great things to say about the 
place. BUT I wish some of the overly patriotic realise that it's NOT THE ONLY 
place that has such opportunities. That other countries are also great places 
to live. 

It's one of the problems with a dualist attitude. Anything not "us" (read good, 
white^h^h^h^h ... etc) is "them" (<insert "opposites">) has inherant problems 
it isolates people & countries. Ofcource this attitude isn't helped by only 
having a 2 party political system. I'm hertily sick of having to explain the Oz 
multi-party system to people who are incapable of grasping the concept. No 
guess which country many of these people originate from....
