Are you using IP or IPX as the LAN network protocol? If IPX, have you ensured that IP is not bound to the LAN card? That is in Network Neigbourhood's properties, IPX and IPX/SPX are bound to the LAN card while IP is bound to the DialUp adapter. For IE, you can check the Connections section of it's properties page. There's a setting called "always dial my default connection" and since I'm now on a OS/2 box, kinda hard to check without running up to the kids' rooms.
