In the office we RvS> have an old Novell 3.12 server, which is still running just because RvS> our financial software makes use of it. Our main server is a Linux RvS> system running Samba and the users connect to it via NetBios over IP. RvS> Can I safely move this financial software to the Linux-box? In my RvS> opinion it uses the server just as a file-server, however it is called RvS> a novell-version. No NLMs are installed for the software to run. What RvS> pitfalls should i be aware of? Depends. If the software is serialised against the existing server, you're shit out of luck. Some older software actually made a bindery entry recording serial number of the server on install - and moving it to another server is impossible without some pretty fancy tools. However, if it's not serialised, you should be able to run the MARS NWE server on your Linux box, then do a bindfix/bindrest to transfer your existing binderies to the Linux emulator. Then you can copy volumes etc and away you go. I'd be very careful with this, and make sure you have it working BEFORE you turn off the old server - I'm uncertain how exactly the MARS process actually emulates Netware - but it can't hurt to try. RvS> The reason for planning the move is that this novell server is RvS> starting to get a time-bomb hardware-wise. Further, moving everything RvS> to one platform would make things more manageable. 3.12 is a definite problem - however, there's no guarantee the suggested solution above will help - because the MARS process effectively becomes a 3.12 server. Give it a go anyway. It can't hurt. DaZZa --- GoldED/2 3.00.Beta5+ * Origin: WOW BBS - Coming Soon! Netware for the Nintendo! (3:712/888) .
