In the office we RvS> have an old Novell 3.12 server, which is still running RvS> just because our financial software makes use of it. RvS> Our main server is a Linux system running Samba and RvS> the users connect to it via NetBios over IP. Can I RvS> safely move this financial software to the Linux-box? RvS> In my opinion it uses the server just as a file- RvS> server, however it is called a novell-version. No NLMs RvS> are installed for the software to run. What pitfalls RvS> should i be aware of? I cant help you there Ron I dont run Linux I have started to learn it I run a Windows network system over the Novel Web server 4.11 The Novel server has tcpip and complains that i am not loged on to the server so when I get past the logon stage no problems One computer has linux on it but cant get the network card to go wants to be stuborn wont even work with windows motherboard problem. I would be inclined to copy the relevant files to a Dummy directory and see what happends so you can restore when and if required Keep a note book on what you did and the time recorded etc RvS> The reason for planning the move is that this novell RvS> server is starting to get a time-bomb hardware-wise. RvS> Further, moving everything to one platform would make RvS> things more manageable. if you are only running a few computers make up a system with windows 2000 my mate instals them where ever posible and you dont need a server you can also share the internet with them it is waist of resources now to have a server running when Windows will do the job for you. To overcom problem fit one Zip drive to the main computer for backup pruposes I have 8 computers connected that way for home use all kids get on the internet that way with one dialup connection consisting of Novel 4.11, os/2warp runs the BBS, win98se, winme, win2000 I think the son has a win2000 server connected to it as well Novel is not complaining nor does Windoze the son is learning sisco at school that is why all the combinations I will be going on Holidays and will be back in May I should have Linux up and running and connected full time to the internet. so we will see what happends, I also have Novel 5 here but you need a pentium for that I dont see the point in upgrading for that Novell 4.11 on a 486DX 100 mhz vlb scsi 32 megs ram does the job very well has been running since 1996 non stop did have to make a few modifications to the Novell setup as it was to slow with the original setup when you instald it.
