Although this isn't as simple, try using the windows clipboard;
mark the original text with your mouse, press control-c to copy to
clipboard (control-x to move; deleting the original), then go to
Communicator's email or news program and press control-v to moVe
the contents of the clipboard to the destination while editing.

Try pressing backspace...? Let me know if this works, it's
a shortcut that I found on a couple of other browsers; I
assume Netscape uses it too.
