I pretty much "played guitar" on the > bass. In other words, played the bass like I was playing guitar parts. :) I think you hit the nail on the head. Guitarist are mostly thinking of melody. The transition to Bass has been a rhythmic one. The most dramatic support I have had is a great video called The Slap Bass Program by Alek Sklarevsky. It starts with beginning rudiments of slap technique and builds into more complex syncopated rhythms. There is very little left hand technique other than damping, octaves and some little licks but there is a left hand damp that's like another slap which allows for more "triplet" type cadences. It's almost like drum rudiments. I'm not always keen on video instruction but this one video has so much on it that it's worth it's weight in gold.
