Subj : Rock News To : All From : Piper Christian Vierik Date : Thu May 29 2003 07:01 pm TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY RETURNS Terence Trent D'Arby/Sananda Maitreya will return to the stage in the United States this week in support of his first U.S. release in eight years, "Wildcard! -- The Jokers' Edition," out June 3. D'Arby/Maitreya recently announced eight select, live U.S. performances and an appearance on the "Tonight Show" June 4, followed by appearances on the "Late Late Show" and the "Orlando Jones Show." The album was produced by D'Arby/Maitreya and features a Dallas Austin co-produced track as well as two tracks co-produced by Glenn Ballard. "I was living with a sense of dissatisfac- tion regarding what I was expected to do," D'Arby told Vibe magazine. "Something much deeper was pulling at me to take a more truthful look at the role I was playing, because it really wasn't leading to fulfillment or happiness. My best is yet to come. I'm very confident and I'm very excited and I'm very grateful for the people who seem to have a tremendous amount of patience. I look forward to seeing them (U.S. fans) because I have something to share with them now that I didn't have before." The tour starts Wed- nesday in Philadelphia, with additional dates in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and Annapolis, Md. WOMEN WHO ROCK The Women Who Rock magazine showcase, a monthly live music performance series at the Cutting Room -- co-owned by "Sex in the City" actor Chris Noth -- is becoming one of the hot- test parties on the Big Apple scene. At the last showcase April 30, famed E Street Band violinist Soozie Tyrell and Lava recording artists Toby Lightman and Antigone Rising rocked the packed house. Joan Jett, who's on the cover of the current Women Who Rock issue, made a guest appearance. The next showcase will take place Wednesday. Lucy Woodward will perform her smash hit "Dumb Girls" and other tracks off her new album "While You Can." Woodward has performed on "The Tonight Show," "CBS Saturday Morning," "WB11" and "The Caroline Rhea Show." Her video is in current rotation on VH1. Lillix, whose single "It's About Time" is played regularly on more than 100 stations around the country, also is on the bill. A silent auction will be held with proceeds benefiting the charity Musicians On Call. BRIAN WILSON TO PERFORM 'SMILE' Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson will return to London's Royal Festival Hall Feb. 20, 2004. For the first time in his 40-year career, Wilson will perform his unreleased masterpiece, "Smile." The concert will include classic Beach Boys and Brian Wilson favorites as well as selections from his new solo album. Last year Wilson performed sold out concerts at Festival Hall in January and June. The four January 2002 concerts sold out immediately and when Wilson returned to London later that year to perform at the Queen's Jubilee Concert, he sold out another two nights. Among those who attended the Festival Hall performances were Eric Clapton, Roger Daltrey, Elvis Costello and Richard Ashcroft. The gigs were cited as the concerts of the year by most U.K. critics. Wilson and the Royal Festival Hall were honored with the prestigious Live Event of the Year Award by Time Out Magazine. 'FREE COUNTRY' Guitarist/composer/singer Joel Harrison's "Free Country" is a collection of old American Country and Appalachian tunes arranged in unusual, sometimes radical, ways. Singer Norah Jones appears on two cuts, "Tennessee Waltz" and "I Walk the Line." Her poignant reading of these tunes is drenched in soul. The great alto saxophonist Dave Binney contributes to the record, along with pianist Uri Caine and accordionist Rob Berger from the Tin Hat Trio. "Free Country" was re- leased in Europe in late April and has received rave reviews. LISA MARIE TELLS ALL Lisa Marie Presley, riding high on her debut album and about to launch her first tour, is featured in a no-holds- barred Playboy interview. The 35-year-old daughter of rock icon Elvis Presley admits in the interview she likes rough sex "the way they do it in porn movies," and speculates, "I think I'd be much better as a lesbian." Presley explain- ed her bizarre 20-month marriage to Michael Jackson by say- ing: "He is not sexually seductive, but there is something riveting about him. He doesn't let people see who he is... I got caught up and thought I was in love with the man." As for her 107-day marriage to Nicolas Cage, Presley said she ended up hating him after he threw temper tantrums, but that they've patched things up and remain friends. The real man in Presley's life remains her father, who doted on her and took her on road trips. "Anything my father did for me or gave me was done out of love," she said. "I'm sure I had moments when I was a snot. But my mom was there to smack me back to the other side." LIVE LED A treasure trove of Led Zeppelin live material is being released Tuesday on Atlantic Records. "Led Zeppelin DVD," a two-disc set, and "How the West Was Won," a three-CD set, cover rare and unreleased material from one of the most popular live acts in rock history. There is no over- lap between the two releases. "We were never really part of the pop scene," said guitarist and group leader Jimmy Page. "It was never what Led Zeppelin was supposed to be about. Our thing was playing live. In that sense, Zeppelin was very much an underground band. The fact that it became as successful as it did was something that was almost out of our control. We actually shunned commercial- ism, which is why so little official footage of the band has ever been seen before." ALLIGATOR CHOMPS HANDY AWARDS Alligator Records artists dominated last week's W.C. Handy Blues Awards. Singing sensation Shemekia Copeland won three Awards at the 24th renewal of the event, held this year at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis. Copeland, the daughter of the late Texas blues giant Johnny Copeland, won more awards than any other nominee. Her win for Blues Album Of The Year for 2002's Dr. John-produced "Talking To Strangers" marks the second time Copeland has won the category. She won the same award for her 2001 album, "Wicked." She also won Contemporary Female Artist Of The Year and Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year for "Talking To Strangers." Copeland, 24, already has won seven awards. "Queen Of The Blues" Koko Taylor, who took Alligator labelmate Copeland under her wing when the youngster was starting out, won Traditional Blues Artist Of The Year. This is her 23rd W.C. Handy Blues Award. She has received more awards than any other artist -- male or female -- in Handy history. "God- father of Austin Blues," W.C. Clark, from Austin, Texas, won Blues Song Of The Year for "Let It Rain" off of his album, "From Austin with Soul." This is Clark's first W.C. Handy Blues Award. Roomful of Blues took the award for Blues Instrumentalist -- Horns. This is the band's third award. Kristan Ann Carr, the daughter of Springsteen's co-manager Barbara Carr and music jour- nalist Patrick Carr, died from sarcoma a decade ago. Kristin's stepfather, journalist Dave Marsh, was instru- mental in founding the Kristin Ann Carr Fund as part of the TJ Martell Foundation. "Red Star Sounds, Vol 3: Def Jamaica" is scheduled for an August release on Def Jam Records. Many of the artists already have hit the studio, including Cam'Ron and Buju Banton; Capone & Noriega with Deejay Lexxus; and Scarface, Nokio from Dru Hill and T.O.K., who recorded in Jamaica in March. Method Man and Redman col- laborated with Bob Marley's progeny Stephen Marley and Damian Marley at a studio session in Miami. "We're thrilled at the chance to allow artists in hip hop and reggae to make music together while giving back to the community that supports them," said Cristy Barber, president of Tuff Gong/ Ghetto Youths. The arena and amphitheater trek launched May 10 in front of a capacity crowd at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas. Originally slated to end July 26 in Atlanta, the tour has been extended into August. Before the tour got underway, after years of campaigning by the group's fan club, Journey was honored in its hometown of San Francisco April 25 by the California Music Awards with a commemorative plaque on the city's Rock 'N Roll Walk of Fame outside the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. Found- ing member Greg Rollie and former drummer Aynsley Dunbar were on hand for the event, which was hosted by Mayor Willie Brown, who spoke to the crowd of his experiences at Journey concerts. Journey recently released a four- song EP, "Red 13" (Red Distribution). It was written, recorded, produced and mixed by the band entirely at Jonathan Cain's home studio. "Red 13" is also available on the band's Web site journeytheband.com and at all of the band's shows.
