I found the problem... It has to do with the console window size.

When I tried it first, the window size was set to 80x300 (with a scrollbar). 
Using this window, MsgEd freezes with a big blue area in the console, right 
after reading the area config and printing the line about incorporating charset 
stuff.

I changed the window to 80x25 and then it worked. So, I guess there is a bug in 
the window size detection...
