Subj : Upgrading... To : Matt Mc_Carthy From : Tobias Ernst Date : Fri Oct 13 2000 02:00 pm Hallo Matt! > Sometime in the not too distant future I might have to give up this > good old DOS stuff and upgrade to Win ME. > What version would you recommend, the Win 32, or the NT? You mean Dos32 or NT? I don't know, I have never used Win ME yet and have not got any reports. I did not even try Windows 2000. So just give it a try and report the results. Normally, the NT version should be the best recommendation, but I don't know how good or bad (in terms of speed) the ME variant of the Windows console API is. > Next, would this djgpp be able to compile those versions? Djgpp compiles the DOS DPMI version (which will probably work under ME). In order to compile the NT version, you'd best use Borland C++ 4.x or 5.x, or Watcom C. The free compilers I have tried (mingw32 and rsxnt) all are able to compile the NT version of Msged, but all of them yield some strange problems that do not occure when using Borland C. I am also not happy about this situation (given that I can crosscompile the NT version with mingw or rsxnt, but have to boot Windows in order to use Borland C), but I have not yet found what the problem is.
