Nobody expected the German philosophers sketch! :) They expected nothing because before the German episodes Monty Python was more or less unknown in Germany. Alfred Biolek, a now very (and then mildly) famous showmaster in Germany, saw them in England and tried to "import" the Flying Circus. His first step was creating the German "German episode", propably to give the Germans a lighter approach to the wonders of Python. Thus, this German episode was shown in Germany _before_ the original Flying Circus. BTW, Alfred Biolek is the narrator of the German episode (if it was not dubbed for the english version) and the second doctor (opposite Graham Chapman) in the "Merchant of Venice" skit.
