This He certainly did when I was there, and I told a couple of people there at Comerica Park that I was booing him not only as a fan of the Tigers, but also as a resident of the DFW area. From the conversations I had with people in the stands and the people at the concessions, folks are kinda sore that Gonzalez didn't take the money and run, although personally, I can't see how he was going to be the cornerstone for a great Tiger team. The last great one was a product of the farm system, and I probably still have old yearbooks where guys like Morris, Trammell, and Whitaker are listed as farm prospects. JS> Oh, I know. I'm no major Rocker fan - the guy is definitely JS> an ass, but I think enough is enough. Far more folks out JS> there have done far worse things in life than utter a few JS> poorly chosen words and those things are forgotten about for JS> the most part (Michael Irvin springs immediately to mind). Well, that's uh, er, uh... erm, uh, different, er, uh...somehow. Since he played for America's Team (tm), he could do no wrong. I can think of one Hall of Famer who picked up a baseball bat and attacked someone on the field with it. Rocker ain't going near the Hall of Fame, but as you say, there are worse things he could do. JS> Rocker's no boy scout, but when he's on, he's an awesome JS> pitcher. My problem with him now is that he was mostly JS> ineffective in Cleveland. As I understand it, the clubhouse atmosphere contributed to that. ->> BTW, I met local sportscaster Scott Murray a few weeks ago. ->> Turns out that his wife was a saleswoman where I was working, ->> and he was in the front office one day as I came in. JS> Talk sports, or just say hello? Just said "Hello." I'm certain I'll encounter him again, given that I pay the place a visit infrequently to pick up some goods. JS> lot of shit being umpires - most people don't realize it. If JS> you can find it, pick up a book called "You're out, and JS> you're ugly, too" by Durwood Merrill. He's a recently JS> retired umpire, and this book is an awesome read. Talks JS> about what you have to go through to become an umpire. It's Handgun training? I'll see what I can dig up from the second-hand paths. JS> Amazon.com. Particularly scary was his talk about the JS> Mexican leagues, where most everyone in the stands carries JS> guns. The antics of baseball are nothing when you consider that there are riots over what happens on the soccer fields. I do have a regret that, when I was in Europe, I didn't get a chance to see a "football" game, just to see the crowds and their reaction. Something tells me that a guy in an Eagles jersey and a guy in a Red Wings jersey might get -killed- in the wrong areas. :-) JS> I know I don't list Kapler, but he's supposed to be a rover, JS> the guy who steps in to give people rests. Nothing like a good player who can do it all. You're probably aware of Mickey Stanley, who served us so well in that regard in Detroit when I was a kid, and even played a position new to him (shortstop) in the Series of '68 (and played it well). JS> I know they want to trade him, but won't just trade JS> him, he'll only go if we get a decent young pitcher back, I see the gas is being turned up on Helling... --- * Origin: Fnord (1:393/9005) .
