Subj : Texas Rangers To : Steve Quarrella From : Joe Siegler Date : Fri Jan 11 2002 12:51 am -> He got as many boos in Detroit as Juan Gonzalez did. :-) I wonder if Gonzalez will still get booed in Detroit? This season I'm picking up the MLB Extra Innings package via DirecTV. I'll get to see home coverage, so I'll have to watch the Rangers in Detroit via Detroit's coverage, and see what angle they take. -> At the risk of sounding like Arnold Rimmer in peace and love mode, it isn't -> really fair to the guy that, every time they talk about him, they show all -> of his shenanigans. Why not show some of the strikeouts and other fine -> pitching that made the guy a threat not that long ago? If anything, if the -> guy is given the impression that they hate him here, that's going to do -> wonders for his morale. Oh, I know. I'm no major Rocker fan - the guy is definitely an ass, but I think enough is enough. Far more folks out there have done far worse things in life than utter a few poorly chosen words and those things are forgotten about for the most part (Michael Irvin springs immediately to mind). Rocker's no boy scout, but when he's on, he's an awesome pitcher. My problem with him now is that he was mostly ineffective in Cleveland. -> BTW, I met local sportscaster Scott Murray a few weeks ago. Turns out that -> his wife was a saleswoman where I was working, and he was in the front -> office one day as I came in. Talk sports, or just say hello? -> play actors back to the right side of the fence if they realize that their -> mayhem will cost them (Then again, attacking umps is nothing new...ISTR that -> in the late 1800s, an ump was shot to death over a game, and ol' Ty Cobb was -> known to tangle with the umps in hotel rooms after disputing calls. But -> Carl Everett's going to have to hit .366 lifetime before he can get away -> with that.). Indeed - I'm surprised the Alomar spitting thing didn't get as much punishment as it did. Umpires go through an awful lot of shit being umpires - most people don't realize it. If you can find it, pick up a book called "You're out, and you're ugly, too" by Durwood Merrill. He's a recently retired umpire, and this book is an awesome read. Talks about what you have to go through to become an umpire. It's a paperback, and I think you can pick it up for 5 bucks on Amazon.com. Particularly scary was his talk about the Mexican leagues, where most everyone in the stands carries guns. -> Just waiting on the results of a physical, as I understand it. My honest -> question is "Why?" And what is it that Gonzalez -wants?- The Tigers -> offered him what was then the largest contract in history. He admitted that -> he liked Oh, that's easy. GOnzalez wants to be comfortable. He will be that here in Texas. -> I will be very sorry to see Gabe Kapler go. Maybe they can send him back -> home to Detroit. It's not like they don't need him. It's starting to look like he might stay. Projected linups include this: Catalanotto/DH Greer/LF Arod/SS Igor/RF Palmeiro/1B Pudge/C Everett/CF Lamb/Perry/3B Young/2B I know I don't list Kapler, but he's supposed to be a rover, the guy who steps in to give people rests. I know they want to trade him, but won't just trade him, he'll only go if we get a decent young pitcher back, which doesn't look like it's available (unless someone else's OF's get hurt).
