Subj : Expos To : Ed Grinnell From : Lucien Carrier Date : Sat Jul 22 2000 05:46 am Bonjour Ed, Le 20 Juillet 2000 [20:45], Ed Grinnell ‚crivait ceci … Lucien Carrier... EG> So much has been made about how Montreal is a hockey city and EG> that's the reason why MLB hasn't worked there but the fact is that EG> Montreal used to be one of the top teams in attendance. Blaming EG> hockey doesn't hold water because the Canadiens were far more EG> powerful AND popular when the Expos were drawing 2 million or more EG> fans. You can find easily a lot of baseball fans here at Montreal but with all negative comments we heard about the Expos (Owner, medias, etc.), it's easy to understand the "problem with attendance" we have. :-( EG> before and their fans understand that. The old Montreal regime was EG> too cheap and the local media gave them an out by blaming the fans EG> for being hockey fans. Hockey is as much of a religion in Toronto EG> and yet, they don't seem to have the same problems. I agreed. We have not only hockey fans. We have a very good football club too, the Montreal's Alouettes, and that team have a very success here but they make an aggressive marketing to attract more fans! Not the case for the Expos. We can see one of the best baseball players (Vladimir Guerrero, Jose Vidro, Dustin Hermanson, Javier Vasquez...) but if you ask people in town, major part of them can't name one of these players but they can talk with you about Loria, the Olympic Stadium (personnally, I love this building, my " Big O "!), the salary, the bad attitude baseball stars have, the moving of the club (Washington? Charlotte?) and more but about the Expos's players, they have a blank! (GGG) It's not their entire fault; the marketing for the Expos are poor, quiet and cheap ($$$)...
