Subj : ADSL in LAN To : Udo Zaydowicz From : Ger Vloothuis Date : Sat Jun 10 2000 10:39 am Hello Udo! 07 Jun 28 21:12, Udo Zaydowicz wrote to all: [........] UZ> Not yet knowing what will be part of the ADSL system (modem, UZ> interface, software ??) the question is now: Will this set-up as well UZ> work with TeleDenmark ADSL? It depends on what homebox TeleDenmark will be using to rollout their ADSL. Your interface will most likely be a 10Base-T ethernet connector, and that would plug simply into a hub or switch from your home LAN. The ADSL homebox would include some sort of an ethernet bridger function, and would probably let you have up to 8 MAC addresses on your home LAN with direct outside access. Alternative, you can buy a small access router with two ethernet interface connectors, use one for the ADSL (WAN) side and the other for the home LAN side. These small access routers usually include a DHPC server and NAT, and function as a firewall between the ootside world and your homeLAN. If you have an old 486 floating around somewhere that is too slow to be used as a workstation, you can give it a new life by using it as a firewall/access router. You only need two NIC's in this machine and use one of the many freeware software packages to perform this function. A good additional use for this machine is to run your home LAN mailserver on this machine and a webserver with a couple of startup pages. When you get your connection, I would be very interested to know what make of homeboxes TeleDenmark is deploying and what their connetion fees are. Maybe you can post that some time.
