JP> Hello Gerald, 'tis a nice day today. Bloody hot (in Edmonton, Alberta)! I work as a landscape technician and I spent ten hours under the sun, pulling weeds (it could have been raining and I could have been indoors ).... GM>> Welllllllll, I'm not sure what you mean by "if the network is GM>> setup". All three can connect to the INet... ??? JP> OK, you are connecting to that network, the Web. But the LAN, JP> your network is another ball of wax. Because all three connect to the JP> Web will not mean that they can "see" each other. There is some steps JP> involved here in your LAN setup. L = local ! I'll get there, eventually.... :)) GM>> Huuuuh? Would you be meaning: "My Network Places"? JP> Yes, that line. Semantics at times escape me. I will beg off JP> the 3.1 machine as it is long gone here. "My Network Places" on the XP and "Network Neighborhood" on W98 and I don't know what it is on WfW (or even if anything similar exists on WfW). I'm going to continue throwing any info about WfW, because there has to be someone out there reading this that has the knowledge I'm seeking.... GM>> I can see WinXP (MSHome) and W98SE (Workgroup) [and wfw311 isn't even GM>> showing because it's my DOS/Fidonet box and wfw is not on that GM>> often]. Each have some folders and some folders have some files... GM>> I'll try to drag and drop something from one folder on one box to GM>> another folder on the other box and see what happens. JP> If you can see them, then the LAN is good. The Drag & Drop JP> will do you good service, anyway that you use is fine, there is a send JP> to option too that you can access with a mouse right click. I tried the D&D technique to copy a file from the XP to the W98... It appeared to work, but I never had a chance to try copying from W98 to XP -- I'll have to give it a try when I have more time. GM>> Somewhere? The router is setting the DHCP service and assigning GM>> the IP addresses depending on which box was powered up first, GM>> after the router got power... JP> DHCP will assign an IP to the one machine that is turned one. JP> it can not do so for other machines. They have to get their own IP JP> either DHCP assinged or user corrected. The router sets the IP addresses for all the machines when they come online and maintains those addresses until the router looses power (and that happens regularly with this particular router). My log file shows that it is still maintaining a couple of IP addresses when my neighbor brought two computers over a couple of months ago.... GM>> My SMC7004VBR router has a firewall (and I did a GM>> basic setup) and I don't think I require ZA (or any other GM>> firewall software). JP> Ooopps ! The router is a hardware firewall, a software one JP> will double your security. I would not be without either. I look at JP> all the messages sent my way and since I got the souble protection, JP> not a single malware has touched me. I really need that much security? If so, which machine should I set it up on? GM>> I know about ZA and McAfee (I use F-Prot on the XP and NAV on the GM>> W98SE), but could you explain XPP and the "WL" router? JP> XPP stands for XP-Pro and WL is Wireless. A router needs not JP> be WL to do its work of blocking malware. It is even a little JP> less protection than a non-WL as the signal could be "listened to" by JP> anybody with a WiFi possibility. Mine is set up to allow the ISP IP JP> and the IP of my two other systems, nothing else. An indiscreet ear JP> (WiFi) could hear me but would not be able to enter my systems. I now understand XPP as opposed to XPH (XP Home).... I decided to go with a wired system for two reasons: Costs and security -- I don't think anyone can eavesdrop on a wired system... ??? JP> Others on this echo are much more qualified than I and I hope JP> that you keep asking. They are barrelfulls of fun too. What little I JP> know was learned here. I had this echo turned on some time ago and then turned it off due to a lack of traffic. Now, I have a need for the echo and therefore traffic will be generated. Let's start having some fun! BTW, I have to ask -- Are you a Canuck also? Cheers ... Gerald .... Nothing I have found is factual, except the bits that sound like fiction. --- GoldED+/DPMI32 v1.1.5-040330 [msg of Tuesday June 29 2004] * Origin: Are you áetazoid or something? (1:342/512) .
