Subj : A rather general question To : Roy Witt From : Gerald Miller Date : Tue Jun 29 2004 08:06 pm Hello Roy, Responding to a post in the LAN area: On Monday June 28 2004 at 23:18, Roy Witt [1:10/22] wrote to Gerald Miller, about: A rather general question RW> I have 4 machines on a network with W2k on a P-IV @ 2.8ghz as the main RW> dude, 2 using W98SE and one with Lindows on it and a P3-500 waiting RW> for a HD before it gets on the network. RW> As for the 3.11 machine, I don't know much about that OS as I jumped RW> from DOS right into W98.. You're light years ahead of me hardware wise... It took me almost two years (off and on) to get WfW3.11 on the network [okay, the INet] because the particular NIC that I was trying to use had some flaws in the driver information file and the company was not willing to spend resources to support an OS that is so outdated. I wound up trashing the NIC in favor of one that has WfW drivers [Netgear]. Eventually, I want to move my Fidonet software over to the Windows 98SE box because it is my understanding that W98SE is the last version of Windows to have any support for DOS. My options were to buy a USB card and try to burn all the programs onto CDs using my external burner [kind of "iffy" because I have no idea if the burner software will install within 3.11] or set up some kind of network on the DOS box. Since I had 3.11 (never really used it), I figured that would be the easiest way to proceed (another misconception) because all versions of Windows #_should_# communicate with one another...... Your idea of identically named folders on all the machines may have some merits, but it is my plan to name the folders relevant to the machine they reside on, i.e.: "W98 Hold", "XP Hold", etc. I'll need some time to get my ducks in a row (set up the folders, set the folder properties to share, etc., etc.)... Thanks ... Gerald .... If you can't tell the difference, there is no difference. --- GoldED+/DPMI32 v1.1.5-040330 [msg of June 29, 2004] * Origin: Artificial Intelligence beats human stupidity!
