I also don't see where you need DNS at all, you don't have to refer to other machines than the one you're working on with names, you can use IP numbers. Assuming, that is, that you're using TCP/IP to begin with. Are you? I know that with 98 that's an option, I know nothing at all about XP, and I'm not sure if 3.11 even supports it.
