I'll try to maintain a pleasant type of mind and jump to the givens: LEGACY (DOS) Machine - Pentium MMX 200MHz 512Mb RAM two IBM 512Mb hard drives one AOpen 10/100 MBPS fast EtherNet adapter card one external USRobotic 56K fax/modem Windows 2000 Pro Machine - AMD Duron 760MHz 576Mb RAM one Maxtor 20Gb and one Maxtor 60Gb hard drives one AOpen 10/100 MBPS fast EtherNet adapter card Additional - one D-Link VKM-4 switch one SMC (wired) Barricade router one Motorola cable modem Now, I'd like to discuss the requirements: I would like to be able to transfer files/data between the two machines. Floppy disk file transfer is getting to be a PITA! Some files are too large to place on a floppy disk without doing some labor intensive juggling. I would also like to be able to access the Internet through the cable modem from the Legacy machine. I've been considering installing ZIP221 on both machines: ===8< Begin Zip 2.21 FILE_ID.DIZ === ZIP 2.21 is a tiny DOS file transfer utility that exchanges files at high speed between desktop, notebook, or handheld computers over a serial or parallel cable. Compatible with Win95/98 too. No memory-resident drivers. User configurable. Menu driven, or command line operation (good in batch files). Can compare directories, back up changed files or entire directory trees. Requires IBM PC compatibles & appropriate cable. Freeware. ===8< End Zip 2.21 FILE_ID.DIZ === but I would have to hunt around for my serial/null modem cable and serial switch (Legacy machine has external modem on COM1 and mouse on COM2)... The other concern I have is whether this program will operate correctly on the Win2K machine - documentation implies it could be an "iffy" proposition... Installng the ZIP program _may_ solve the file transfer requirement, but does not address the Internet/cable modem requirement... Can you recommend a FreeWare / (inexpensive) ShareWare program(s) that would fulfil my requirements AND make use of the existing network cards and router? Thanks ...
