Subj : Switch vs. router? To : SEAN DENNIS From : THURSTON ACKERMAN Date : Sat Mar 09 2002 09:26 am SD>I was out shopping today when I came upon a Linksys 10/100 switch. I was SD>thinking about getting it for my LAN. Right now, I have my two computers on SD>crossover cable, both with 100mb cards in them. My laptop has a 3Com/Megahe SD>10mb LAN/56K modem combo PCMCIA card in it. Here's why I didn't buy it: I a SD>planning on getting DSL. If I get a router like I'm planning (again, a Link SD>model), do I /REALLY/ need that switch or am I just being redundant in SD>equipment? If you get a 4 port router you will be useing the switch included. I have a NetGear RT-314 four porter that manages our four PCs on our SoHo LAN here that includes 2 win98, a win95 and a XP-home nicely. The included firewall functions very well but I still have Norton 2002 antivirus in each boxs just in case. When I get my old radio shack room back in use, I contemplate useing a wireless to save pulling cat5 cable up three floors.
