Subj : Newbie Networking Question To : All From : Bennie Hutto Date : Mon May 28 2001 12:42 pm Hello everybody! I'm in need of a little assistance here. First, let me give you my machine's specs... To be Server machine: P3/750mhz Duron, 160meg RAM, ADSL connection via a USB Alcatel Speed Touch USB modem. Win98SE No NIC installed at this time. To be Client machine: 486DX/100mhz machine, Win98SE, 16meg RAM. 1 of the IBM NIC's is installed in this machine. I have had both machines setup and could see/talk to each other, but I had to remove the Alcatel modem for it to work. I do want to share my internet connection between machines. I have called numerous computer shops inquiring about DSL routers none of which will apparently work with USB. With my modem and networking installed, I get a message in one of my server programs that tells me I am connected to NETWORK instead of my normal adsl-xx-xx-ags-bellsouth.net but the modem syncs up and the same program shows me my correct IP address, something's just not jiveing between the NIC card and the adapter card that the Alcatel installed under the Network Adapters in the System device drivers. Is there a way to set the 'default'? Question 2: Is it possible, to access the client computer via DOS from the Server computer? I would like to either have the server applications on the server computer and the data files on the client computer, or if getting the internet sharing fixed and I could run the servers and the data on the client. I have 2 IBM PCI Ethernet adapters and a crossover cable. The adapters have the elongated phone jacks (crossover cable) and a sort of joystick or serial looking port (AUI, CAT5?). Sorry, these were given to me, disks but no manuals. What is the least expensive way to do what I'd like? Are the NIC cards not what I need? Would a DSL router even do any good, especially with USB? Further suggestions? Thanks much, Bennie --- WildCat! * ViaMail! * GoldED+ * Origin: The Wall BBS, Augusta Ga: Where the fun *never* ends! (1:360/5) .
