You'll need either Win98's SA>> "Internet sharing" installed, MG> I saw something about that on the Microsoft website, but I MG> think it only came with Win 98 SE. I'm pretty sure I have MG> the earlier version of Win 98. Is there a add-on patch I can MG> get from Microsoft for it? No idea, sorry - but if not Wingate's free for a 2-machine home LAN and it has some vague security too, unlike ICS. SA>> Leave the DNS/gateway/etc properties of host (cable SA>> modem) machine alone, but on client(s) machines you may SA>> need to add the gateway - check docs for whatever SA>> sharing util you use. MG> How do I set DNS/gateway properties? Control Panel -> Network: Add TCP/IP then select it and hit properties - all the settings are in there. MG> Would it simplify things if I /don't/ enable file & printer MG> sharing? He's concerned about his son having access to his Certainly. MG> personal computer, so maybe it'd be better to only enable MG> internet connection sharing? If I enable file & printer MG> sharing, how could I password protect his computer to MG> prevent his son accessing his files? You can set passwords for any drive or directory you wish to share. SA>> Add a few "map drives", enable sharing on the printers SA>> and life becomes much easier. :) MG> Can I enable printer sharing /without/ file sharing? Yes - just enable both in Network but don't share any drives or directories. If there is a chance of there being legitimate access between the two, setup a directory called "c:\share" or something and share that. That way if you need to send a file to another computer, copy it to that directory then read it from the other directory. All other files will be safe. -- Simon Devon, England --- Digital Dilemma BBS * Origin: www.s.avery.btinternet.co.uk (2:255/90) .
