I'm reluctatnt to continue this thread here, but....it is open, so...

I remembered, after a lot of false starts....

Every once in awhile something (Windoze) changes the drive TYPE!  I loaded
Toms/rt/bt to look at fdisk and discovered the problem, changed it back
and all is well!
