try this:

make a file called ansion and chmod +x it

contents:

#!/bin/bash
echo -a "\033(U"

run it from your .bashrc

i think this is the fix i had to run to get linux to recognize all 8 bits (by
default i think it's 7bits only). natedogg of demonic hooked me up with this
and it worked.
