Subj : Fun job quirks To : All From : Rocko Date : Thu Aug 05 2004 02:05 am Working in the software research group at AMD has unforeseen quirks. One of my coworkers got to tell some folks at Microsoft that they stuff they're having us profile right now runs terribly, and they were forced to agree. It's one of those rare moments when Microsoft doesn't really get its way. Of course, they've put off shipping an AMD-64 compliant OS once already, but that just means Linux gets an even firmer hold in the server market. The other time was when Microsoft decided they'd be happy if their 64-bit compiled code ran just as fast as the 32-bit compiled code, to AMD's dismay. In the middle of all this, gcc was getting help making their compilers take advantage of 64-bit. Lo and behold, Microsoft runs it occasionally benchmarks against gcc, and suddenly 64-bit optimization becomes a priority! I wish this 64-bit lala land would last forever . . . ;) ....
