Does that make any sen It is a common mistake to think that every machine has an IP address. This is WRONG. Each seperate INTERFACE has a separate IP address -- possibly more than one, but that is only oin special cases. If your PC has two LAN cards, then each will have an IP address. if it also has a PPP connection via modem, that too will have a separate IP address. You need to try to connect to the IP address of the interface that you will be using. If connecting from the LAN via a NIC, telnet to the IP address of the NIC. If connecting to the machine from out on the net via it's PPP interface, then connect to the IP address of the PPP interface. I don't know the Linksys cable modem router, but I assume it is a little box wired to your gateway PC via a piece of UTP (twister pair cable) into the NIC on the PC. If so, the PC's NIC will have an IP address (192.168.1.101 ?) but the cable modem box will have an IP address too (192.168.1.100 perhaps?) and the _other_ side of the cable modem which has wires running out of the house ("the cable") will have some sort of IP address as well. THIS is the IP address you will have to telnet to (24.93.177.166 maybe?) from out on the net. From your PC, point your browser at http://www.whatismyip.com and you should get the IP address of the gateway interface seen by the rest of the net. Use that IP to telnet to. If you can't telnet to it, perhaps your ISP is blocking access on the telnet port (23). Try shifting your telnet server onto another high-numbered port (over 1023 and less than 65535 -- say 12345) and try telnetting to that instead like so: telnet 205.247.341.19 12345 (stick the port you want after the IP) and see if you can connect. Or try connecting to other ports that may be open. Ping the IP and see if it responds. See what happens. .
