Subj : RAID + LVM, anyone? To : All From : Angus McLeod Date : Mon Oct 10 2005 01:43 am Building a new RAID server (and dealing with a new 80 Gbyte drive that was dead, out of the box). I'm trying a new configuration. Using two drives, I use 'cfdisk' to slice the drives up into 16 gig partitions, such as: /dev/hdb1, /dev/hdb2, /dev/hdb3, /dev/hdb5, /dev/hdb6, /dev/hdd1, /dev/hdd2, /dev/hdd3, /dev/hdd5, /dev/hdd6, Then I 'mkraid' pairs of partitions into matching RAID-1 arrays, so that /dev/hdb1 and /dev/hdd1 become /dev/md0, /dev/hdb2 and /dev/hdd2 become /dev/md1, and so forth, and 'pvcreate' these pseudo-devices. Next I 'vgcreate' a volume group using all the pseudo-devices, and 'lvcreate' a logical volume consisting of the entire volume. Finally, I 'mkreiserfs' a filesystem on the logical volume, add a line in /etc/fstab, 'mount' the space on /music, and start copying my Ogg Vorbis files onto it! :-) The plan is to serve the files on the LAN using Apache, and to make the space available for local mounting via NFS. Anyone doing anything similar, with combinations of "md" and "lvm"? I'd like to discuss pros and cons while still experimenting, and *before* putting the machine into full use. --- þ Synchronet þ Linus is a regular at The ANJO BBS. No, Linus Brathwaite! .
