When you do an uptime, it shows you the load average load over the last 1, 5, and 15 minutes. "average load" is the average number of process waiting for the CPU. On my BBS box for example (An AMD K6/300 with 64MB of RAM) the loads are 0.02m 0.04, and 0.03. In general anything over 1 means that you're at 100% CPU usage. If it's over two, it means that process aren't being serviced as fast as they need the CPU.
