Subj : New BSD distribution... To : dove.unix From : Tracker1 Date : Sat Jul 30 2005 04:28 pm This is the single nicest starting point I've ever had the pleasure of working with... http://www.pcbsd.org/ It's a simple/straight-forward installation, no live-cd version (sorry), you start off with a KDE desktop setup, and X, that's about it.. there's very few packages installed to start with.. It has a unique installer/packager system that is really nice (though only very few packages in this format so far)... you also can fallback to the ports system, as the base os is FreeBSD-5.x ... Other than OS-X this is about the nicest setup process I've seen... they're also working on a Kamel (control panel) interface, that aims to be as straight forward as OS-X's, with an installer system akin to many windows installers, with a simple uninstall ability... Check out the screenshots at the site, and may want to try it out.. have it on a machine here, but it had no sound card, and is only an athlon@600... may try it under vmware, or virtual-pc on my faster desktop, as kde3 isn't done justice on the hardware in question.... I wish this project all the best, as it's the most straight forward *nix installation I've gone through, it's bsd based and can use all the freebsd ports (including linux compatability layer)... with this as a base point, I can only see this project gaining *MUCH* more support than many other distributions (linux or bsd)... note: this is a DESKTOP distribution, so wouldn't necessarily suggest it for server use, though it is really nice. -- Michael J.
