Yes, Gentoo is not for the faint of heart. Though the level of complexity largely depends on the stage you base your install on. Stage1 means you start from scratch (all source except for the staticly built chroot you work within to build the system). A Stage 2 provides you with the boot strap already compiled (and you must choose a correct stage2 tarball for your architecture). Stage 2 might also give you a minimal base system precompiled for you, too. I have never done a stage2 so I do not remember what it said in the docs. My system is a stage1. There are a lot of people using stage 3, which is not nearly as hard as one and two. Stage 3 you can do an entire system from prebuilt binaries, and the only thing you will compile is your kernel and maybe lilo/grub. I have done a stage3 before and it can be done in a reasonable amount of time; stage1 installs require you to have a lot of time on your hands (i.e. a complete weekend) especially if the machine doing the compiling is rather slow. Now, when you do updates to a stage3, you can compile them rather than use binaries. The true gem of Gentoo is Portage, which is the package management system, and takes care of compiling the software for you. Getting kde installed is as simple as the following command line: # emerge kde (and wait a day as that is a large project lol). ah well, enough rambling! - Ibanez ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ ú ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ The Bit Bucket BBS Http, Telnet, FTP: Address 1: bitbucket.homedns.org Address 2: bitbucket.zapto.org ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ ú ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ --- þ Synchronet þ The BitBucket BBS - bitbucket.homedns.org .
