just for the geek factor... I'll relate that I did a Gentoo stage 1 on an "old"
compaq presario laptop. It is a K6-2 400Mhz machine with a 6 GB hard disk and
160MB of ram. Took a loooooooooong time to compile everything, but absolutely
every piece of hardware was supported on that laptop ;)

I've yet to try it on my HP laptop (which has a P4 in it - would take a lot
less time).
