Gentoo is pretty much a DIY distro, it essentially starts with a cleaned up distro, and the "gentoo" way with emerge will compile software/packages for your setup. I setup a mysql gentoo box, that pretty much only had the network stack, and what was req'd for mysql.. nothing else.. it was connected via a giga-e crossover cable to the webserver it was being used with.. thing ran faster than anything I'd seen before/since... -- Michael J.
