I really need to check it out. > Yeah, Gentoo has some nice features (Portage, Portage, and Portage! :) Installation is less painful for those with slower computers now that there are prebuilt binaries of everything but the kernel. However, you loose tweakability by using prebuilt binaries. (I know, most people don't care to do a system from source). That said, even if you're a binary install type of person, Portage is just a very nice package management system. :) And if you have an Athlon XP 3000+ or P4 3Ghz and up, source compiles really aren't that painful anymore timewise. I mean, it's not like it takes a week to compile the OS now. ;) My last install (about a year ago) took about 8 or so hours for the base system and kernel to be compiled, installed, and the system made bootable (though I've had extensive practice at the stage 1 install at this point so maybe I'm just really good! ;) The real bear is X and KDE/Gnome. That usually takes all day. :( Oh and while I'm at it... Gentoo as a "n00b" friendly interface now (or I think it's been released now).
