Look in your /etc/inittab file for the "getty" entries.  It might be 
'getty', 'mgetty', 'agetty' or whatever.  Consult the docu ("man agetty") 
on how to configure.  A good distro will install everything in close to 
working condition and you will only have to customize according to your 
modem.

Try plain 'ppp' without the 'd'.

Well then I'd say you have the package you need, and just need to read the 
docs and do the config.
