Have you tryed Fluxbox GUI? Its not only super light/fast, it gives a lot on
the configuration side. Just edit .fluxbox/ini for whatever backgrounds/themes
ya wish.

First time I tryed I thought ugh - very stark, but now is my GUI of choice.
Love the Slackware, its sweet.
