Oh... from a newer version to older is less likely... a 5.x is almost
guaranteed to have problems on a 4.x system... 4.x could possibly run and may
possibly not.

You *can* build ports in a directory other than the default though... if you
can run arbitrary programs, you can run gcc and build ports with a different
prefix... see man ports for more info.
