On an SVR4 system you must have swap at least equal in size to your RAM. Under Linux you can have less or more, to taste. I usually match the size in RAM, except i) if RAM is very small, I use more swap, and ii) if RAM is very large I use less swap. Right now, I have 2x 128 meg swap partitions and 512 meg RAM.
