OK that seems to have cured it. 

So what are these little jewels and what might have corrupted them?

BTW I had to do the same thing for the other network I get mail from.

\SBBS\DATA\qnet\VERT.ptr 

Oh well maybe a paragraph in a FAQ somewhere sometime.
